HVAC Acronyms - What Do They Mean?

Learn what HVAC acronyms like SEER, AFUE, and BTU mean with Steinhardt Heating & Air Conditioning’s guide to common heating and cooling terms.

What do all those HVAC terms mean? How do we use them? They can be tough to remember since there are so many, HVAC is even an acronym! Let's break it down, shall we?

HVAC - Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. Hopefully this one sticks in your head!

AFUE - Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. This is a standard measurement of how effectively a furnace converts energy from the fuel it uses to warm the air for your home. Usually you'll see percentages like 80% and 95% to 98%. The higher the number, the more fuel efficient the system is.

MERV - Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values. These ratings indicate a filter's efficiency in capturing airborne particles and contaminants. Some examples are lint, carpet fibers, dust, allergens like pollen and mold, and even bacteria and viruses.

IAQ - Indoor Air Quality. This is referring to the air quality inside your home or business. Take into account the dust, debris, dander, etc!

SEER - Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. SEER measures and rates the efficiency of air conditioners and heat pump to effectively cool a home. This is the measure of the electrical input vs the amount of it can cool in a season.

VRF - Variable Refrigerant Flow. An all-electric HVAC technology that uses a singlet outdoor unit connected to multiple indoor units to provide customizable heating and cooling - dividing a building into zones for premium comfort and energy efficiency!

HPSF - Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. This measures the heating efficiency of a heat pump. Similar to SEER, but for winter use. Heating mode.

EER - Energy Efficiency Ratio. Similar to SEER!

BTU - British Thermal Unit. This is the base for all our work. This represents the heating and cooling capacity that our equipment can produce. We also measure your home when needed so we can match up the equipment to the homes needs.

Smart/WiFi Thermostats: Are They Worth It?

Explore the benefits of smart and WiFi thermostats, from remote temperature control to potential energy savings, with Steinhardt Heating & Air Conditioning.

If you live in Southeast Indiana you already know how unpredictable the weather can be. One day it’s mild and sunny, and the next day you’re waking up to freezing temperatures or thick humidity. These quick shifts can make it difficult to keep your home consistently comfortable - especially if you’re using an older manual or standard programmable thermostat.

A smart thermostat changes that completely.

Modern thermostats do far more than adjust the temperature. They actively learn your habits, respond to weather patterns, optimize energy use, and fine-tune comfort throughout the day. Here’s why more homeowners in Hanover, Madison, and the surrounding areas are upgrading.

          1. It Reacts to Sudden Weather Changes

The Ohio River Valley is known for fast weather swings, especially in spring and fall. Traditional thermostats wait for the indoor air to drift out of range before kicking your system on.

A smart thermostat monitors weather conditions, allowing it to respond before the temperature even changes inside your home. That means:

No more waking up to cold rooms after an overnight drop.

No more coming home to a warm, muggy house in July.

More consistent comfort across every season.

          2. It Keeps Temperatures Steady and Even

One of the biggest comfort complaints in Southern Indiana homes is hot and cold spots—especially in two-story houses or historic homes.

Smart thermostats use advanced sensors and tighter control settings to keep your home within one degree of your preferred temperature. This means:

           Fewer cold areas during winter

           Less overheating upstairs in summer

           Overall more balanced home comfort

If your home struggles with inconsistent temperatures, a smart thermostat is one of the simplest - and most affordable - solutions.

3. It Reduces Humidity During Sticky Summers

Our region gets humid, and humidity makes your home feel warmer than it really is. Many traditional thermostats aren’t designed to handle humidity control.

A smart thermostat improves comfort by:

           Optimizing cooling cycles

Running longer, gentler cycles to remove moisture

Adjusting based on humidity levels, not just temperature

The result is a home that feels cooler, cleaner, and less sticky - without turning your AC down to 68°.

          4. It Learns Your Routine for Personalized Comfort

Whether you commute, work from home, or have kids running between practices and school events, a smart thermostat adapts to your schedule.

You can change the settings to adjust temps for:

           When you wake up

           When you typically leave

           When you return

           When you go to bed

This helps you stay comfortable when you’re home and save energy when you’re not!

          5. It Saves Money While Keeping You More Comfortable

Better comfort doesn’t have to come with higher bills.

A smart thermostat increases comfort while reducing energy use through:

Discover five benefits of ductless HVAC systems, including flexible installation, zoned comfort, and energy efficiency, with Steinhardt Heating & Air.

Our homes are unique, with different layouts, different sizes, and different needs. This is especially true when it comes to heating and cooling. If you’re tired of dealing with the limitations of traditional HVAC systems, it might be time to consider ductless AC units. In this blog, we’ll explore the top five benefits of ductless HVAC systems and why they might be the perfect solution for your home

          What Are Ductless HVAC Systems?

Remember the days of bulky window units and the central air conditioning systems that required a maze of ductwork? For many of us, those systems are a thing of the past, thanks to the advent of ductless HVAC systems. These modern systems, also known as ductless mini-split systems, offer an innovative approach to home heating and cooling. With their compact design and impressive efficiency, ductless AC units have revolutionized how we manage indoor climate control.

Unlike traditional HVAC systems, which rely on extensive ductwork to distribute conditioned air, ductless systems have an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units. These indoor air handling units are mounted on walls or ceilings and connect to the outdoor unit via refrigerant lines. This setup allows for targeted heating and cooling in specific areas of your home, providing a versatile and efficient solution for your comfort needs.

          #1: Energy Efficiency

One of the most noteworthy benefits of ductless HVAC systems is their energy efficiency. Traditional HVAC systems can lose a lot of energy through ductwork. In fact, it’s estimated that up to 30% of energy can be lost due to leaks and inefficiencies in the duct system. Ductless systems eliminate this problem by delivering conditioned air directly to the room. This not only reduces energy waste but also lowers your electric bill.

Ductless mini-split systems use advanced technology to optimize energy consumption. Many mini-split systems come with features like inverter technology, which adjusts the compressor speed based on the heating and cooling needs of the home. This means that the system will only use the necessary amount of energy, reducing overall energy consumption and saving you money.

          Improved Indoor Air Quality

Another major benefit of ductless HVAC systems is the improvement in indoor air quality. Traditional HVAC systems can accumulate dust, mold, and other allergens in the ductwork, which are then distributed throughout the home. Many ductless systems, on the other hand, have multi-stage filtration systems that can significantly reduce dust, bacteria, pollen, and other particulates in the air.

Because ductless mini splits don’t have to rely on ducts, there is no risk of contaminants being spread through the ductwork. This is particularly beneficial for those with allergies or respiratory issues. With a ductless system, you can breathe easier, knowing that the air in your home is likely cleaner and healthier.

          Benefit #3: Easy Installation

Installing a traditional HVAC system can be a lengthy and invasive process, especially if your home does not already have ductwork. Ductless systems offer a much simpler solution. Installation typically involves mounting the indoor unit on a wall and connecting it to the outdoor unit with refrigerant lines, suction tubing, and a power cable. This requires only a small hole in the wall, making the installation process quick and minimally disruptive.

Most air conditioners take several days to install, whereas ductless mini-split systems can often be installed in a single day. This means less hassle and inconvenience for you as a homeowner. Plus, because the installation is less complex, it’s often less expensive than installing a traditional HVAC system.

          Benefit #4: Zoned Comfort

Ductless AC units offer the advantage of zoned comfort, meaning you can control the temperature in individual rooms or specific areas of your home. Each indoor unit operates independently, allowing you to set different temperatures for different zones. This is notably useful for homes with multiple levels or rooms that are used infrequently.

With a ductless system, you can customize the heating and cooling based on your specific needs. For instance, you can keep the bedrooms cooler at night while maintaining a comfortable temperature in the living room during the day. This not only enhances comfort but also leads to significant energy savings, as you’re not wasting energy heating or cooling rooms that aren’t in use.

          Benefit #5: Versatility and Flexibility

Ductless HVAC systems are incredibly versatile and flexible. They can be used in a variety of settings, including homes without existing ductwork, additions, garages, and even outdoor spaces. Because they don’t require ducts, they can be installed in areas where traditional HVAC systems might not be feasible.

Ductless AC units come in various styles to fit different needs. You can choose from wall-mounted units, ceiling cassettes, floor-mounted units, and more. This allows you to select the best option for your space and aesthetic preferences. Many ductless air conditioning systems also come with remote control capabilities, allowing you to adjust the temperature and settings from anywhere in the room.

Comparing Ductless HVAC Systems to Traditional Systems

Unlike traditional HVAC systems, which can be bulky and inefficient, ductless systems offer a sleek and modern alternative. Traditional systems often require extensive ductwork, which can be costly to install and maintain. They also tend to be less energy-efficient due to duct losses and the need to condition large volumes of air.

Ductless systems, by contrast, are compact and efficient. The indoor units are discreet and can be mounted in out-of-the-way places, while the outdoor units are designed to be quiet and unobtrusive. This makes ductless systems an ideal choice for homeowners looking to maximize space and minimize noise.

Choosing the Right Ductless HVAC System for Your Home

When selecting a ductless mini split system, it’s vital to consider factors such as the size of your home, the number of rooms you want to condition, and your specific heating and cooling needs. Consulting with a professional HVAC comfort technician can help you determine the best system for your home.

Energy Bills: Why So High?

High energy bills? Learn how HVAC inefficiency, dirty filters, thermostat settings, and air leaks can raise costs—and what you can do to lower them.

When record-setting cold temperatures hit the midwest, most of us stay indoors and look for ways to stay warm. This can mean you may see higher-than-normal electric bills the following month, which begs the question: “Why does my bill go up when it’s cold outside?”

Simply put, the colder it is outside, the harder your heating system works to keep your home comfortable and heating & cooling is about 50% of our electric bill. In recent years, extended cold snaps and polar vortex events have pushed heating systems to run longer and harder.

          Electric Heat/Heat Pumps

Even if you have lowered your thermostat, extremely cold weather can require your heat pump to change how it operates. When the temperature outside falls below a certain degree, supplemental heat may kick in to help your system run. In extreme cold periods, when heating needs are the highest, most of the heat provided comes from the less efficient supplemental heat. This is how your bill can increase, even if it seems you haven't done anything differently. If you used the emergency heat option on your heat pump, you most likely will need to manually change your thermostat back to normal or you will continue to use supplemental heat.

Even if you rely on your natural gas furnace as your home's main heat source, your electricity bill can still increase. Your natural gas furnace most likely relies on an electricity-powered blower to help move hot air through your home's ductwork. That electricity-powered blower is operating longer and harder to keep the same temperatures in your home when the outside temperature plummets.

          Portable Space Heaters

In extreme cold periods, many people supplement their normal heating system with portable electric space heaters. Electricity to run just one 1,500 watt space heater can cost more than $4 a day, or $30 a week and $130 a month.

As ideal as it would be, cranking your thermostat up 10 degrees on a cold winter’s night won’t make your house warm up any faster. Instead, it makes your heater work harder to reach your desired temperature, costing more money.

Additionally, frequently changing the temperature by a few degrees causes the heater to go into a costly and inefficient cycle of starting and stopping.

Carbon Monoxide and Winter Weather

Learn why carbon monoxide risks increase in winter and how furnace maintenance and CO detectors can help protect your home with tips from Steinhardt.

Carbon monoxide (CO) risk increases in winter due to more people using heating sources, which can lead to dangerous CO buildup in enclosed spaces, especially when snow or ice blocks vents. To prevent poisoning, install and maintain CO detectors, have a professional service check heating systems annually, and clear any snow or ice from exhaust vents and tailpipes.

Worried about your HVAC system and Carbon Monoxide? Check out the Steinhardt Comfort Shield! We will check your carbon monoxide detector during your fall/winter check.

Why winter weather increases carbon monoxide risk:

Increased use of heating devices: During cold weather, homes are heated using furnaces, fireplaces, and space heaters, which can all be sources of CO.

Sealed homes: Windows and doors are kept shut in the winter, limiting ventilation and allowing CO to build up inside if there is a leak.

Snow and ice blockages: Heavy snowfall can block exterior vents for furnaces, dryers, and water heaters, trapping CO inside the home instead of allowing it to vent safely outdoors. Similarly, snow can block a car's tailpipe, and generators or other fuel-burning devices should never be used in a garage or near windows and doors.

How to stay safe from carbon monoxide poisoning

           Install CO detectors:

Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas. Test them regularly and replace them according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Maintain heating systems: Have your furnace, water heater, and other fuel-burning appliances inspected and serviced by a licensed technician every year.

Keep vents clear: After a snowfall, check all exterior vents, including those for your furnace, dryer, and fireplace, and clear any snow or ice that may have accumulated. Also, ensure a car's tailpipe is clear of snow.

           Use devices safely:

Never use a generator, charcoal grill, or gas oven to heat your home. Place generators at least 20 feet away from your home with the exhaust pointing away from it.

Everyone is at risk of CO poisoning. Because CO is invisible and odorless, it's important to know the symptoms of CO poisoning and immediately seek medical help if symptoms occur.

Auxiliary Heat: What Is It?

What does AUX heat mean on your thermostat? Steinhardt Heating & Air Conditioning explains why auxiliary heat turns on and when it may signal a problem.

Auxiliary heat is a backup system for heat pumps that provides extra warmth when the main system can't keep up, typically in very cold weather (below about 35−40°F), when the heat pump is in defrost mode, or if the thermostat is adjusted by more than 2−3° at once. It uses less efficient electric resistance heating and can run up your energy bill if it comes on frequently or is running constantly.

During icy conditions, a heat pump will periodically switch to a defrost cycle to remove frost from the outdoor unit. The auxiliary heat turns on to keep your home warm during this brief period.

          Why it's important to manage

           Efficiency:

Auxiliary heat is less energy-efficient than the heat pump, so it can lead to higher energy bills if it runs too often.

           System health:

Over-reliance on auxiliary heat can put extra strain on the system's components, potentially leading to faster breakdowns over time.

What to do if auxiliary heat seems to be on too much

           Check the thermostat:

Make sure it hasn't been accidentally set to "Emergency Heat" or bumped up significantly.

           Gradually adjust the temperature:

Avoid making large, sudden temperature increases; adjust your thermostat in small increments (e.g.,

           Watch for problems:

If auxiliary heat is running when it's not cold out or the house is already warm, there could be a problem. Contact a professional to check for issues like a faulty fan motor, bad compressor, or thermostat malfunction

It’s important to perform regular maintenance checks to ensure your heat pump is working properly, especially as the colder months roll in. There are a few DIY fixes that can save you some money, but most repairs should be handled by a professional comfort technician.

What is The Defrost Cycle? Heat pumps are vital in many homes - they provide comfort throughout the year. One crucial aspect of their function is the heat pump defrost cycle. This cycle is not just a feature but essential for the heat pump’s efficiency and longevity. Defrost mode in a heat pump is like a winter coat for your system. It protects the heat pump from ice and frost build-up . Why do heat pumps have defrost systems? They ensure the heat pump can transfer heat effectively, even in...

Firepits vs. Fireplaces

One of the best parts of summer in is an evening spent with friends around a fire. With everyone spending more time closer to home these days, that fire is often in one’s backyard.

These backyard fires come in a variety of forms ranging from wood-burning basic firepits ringed by rocks or a metal ring to outdoor fireplaces positioned closer to the house. Each has its pros and cons, but often the decision is made based on space, budget, and availability of various fuel sources.

Two of the more popular trends these days in outdoor living space upgrades are outdoor gas fireplaces and gas firepits. Each offers the benefit of adding a modern flare along with value to one’s home, while also increasing your enjoyment of the space as well. They quickly become a focal point and a cozy gathering spot, while visually transforming your space and creating a relaxing atmosphere.

          Gas Firepits

Perfect for entertaining, gas firepits are great to gather around as they are typically installed away from the home’s walls and roof. One of the best things about gas firepits is that they do not give off any smoke. You’ll never need to deal with the wind blowing smoke in your eyes, or the smell clinging to your clothing and hair. Because they are not releasing pollutants into the air, they tend to be more environmentally friendly than wood-burning firepits. Since they also do not produce sparks, the risk of fire is reduced as well; a primary reason why gas firepits are more likely than wood-burning firepits to be permitted in the city.

Gas firepits are available in a variety of styles and can be personalized to suit your décor, creating a centerpiece that fits perfectly with your outdoor entertainment space. Thanks to the unlimited supply of fuel, you can relax around them for hours without needing to add more wood to the fire. Sitting above ground, often on legs, a gas firepit will be connected to a natural gas line, delivering reliable fuel all year long, which is certainly more convenient than dealing with firewood and needing to douse the flames when you’re ready to leave it. If a natural gas line is not available where you live, you’ll need to take a look at other outdoor firepit options.

          Outdoor Fireplaces

Outdoor fireplaces come in many shapes and styles and are fueled in a variety of ways. If your space is large enough, you can opt for a traditional wood-burning fireplace, although this can be a lot of work to keep it supplied with wood. Expect that it will be messy too, coating everything around it with soot, and permeating nearby clothing and furnishings with that unmistakable campfire smell.

Perhaps the most convenient, safest, and cleanest versions of an outdoor fireplace are electric fireplaces and outdoor gas fireplaces. Much like a gas fire pit, an outdoor gas fireplace is fueled by a natural gas line. Often outdoor gas fireplaces are installed closer to the home, sometimes shielded by glass. These are a great choice for smaller outdoor spaces. In fact, there are indoor/outdoor gas fireplaces available that can be installed into an exterior wall of your home, and are viewable from both outside the home, and inside. Curl up fireside with a book inside, or take the party outside, while still enjoying the warmth and ambiance of your fireplace!

Outdoor gas fireplaces can make an elegant architectural statement in any space. They can take up a small footprint in tighter areas, or become the focal point of your outdoor living space while adding warmth to outdoor entertaining areas. Outdoor fireplaces also often offer a more intimate setting for quiet conversations, relaxing with loved ones, or curling up with a good book.

For those who do not have access to a gas line, consider an electric fireplace, which offers the advantages of portability, while providing a warm, cozy fire to enjoy sitting by. These too can be installed inside an exterior wall, for enjoyment inside and out.

Installing an outdoor fire pit or fireplace in your outdoor living space is sure to add to both the value and your enjoyment of your home; it’s no surprise that these features have exploded in popularity over the past year, within many of us spending more time at home, whether indoors or out! Whether you choose a gas fire pit or a gas fireplace, either fire element will be an excellent addition to your patio or backyard, extending the season and enhancing your space, while providing countless opportunities for your family and friends to make lasting fireside memories.

Heating and cooling problems can cause discomfort and sky-high utility bills on top of inconvenience. Keep your home’s HVAC in tip-top shape with Steinhardt's HVAC Maintenance Checklist.

Weather extremes are putting more pressure on homeowners’ heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in keeping homes cool during the summer and warm in the winter. That's one reason it's more important than ever to keep up your HVAC maintenance. But that's not always top of mind for homeowners.

The HVAC often runs in the background, which means you likely don’t give it much thought — until it breaks down, that is. And that can happen at the worst times. Forty-two percent of homeowners say they’ve experienced HVAC system issues during heat waves, according to a new survey from Hippo, a home insurance company. “A failing HVAC system during a scorching summer can lead to discomfort, costly utility repairs, and even health risks for more vulnerable populations,” says Courtney Klosterman, a home insights expert at Hippo.

But many costly HVAC disasters can likely be prevented. For example, fewer than half of homeowners, 47%, say they’ve had HVAC servicing within the last year. Yet, experts advise annual HVAC servicing to avoid expensive repairs. Even fewer homeowners, 32%, say they’ve done basic cleaning and HVAC maintenance to help prevent heat-related home damage, according to the Hippo survey.

To be fair, many homeowners may not be sure what to do. Refer to this checklist regularly to make sure you’re doing 10 activities that will keep your HVAC humming.

          DIY HVAC Maintenance Tips

Many of the HVAC maintenance tasks that will keep your system operating efficiently are DIY, and these tips will make the process easier.

          Change HVAC Filters Regularly

“Air filters keep dust and particles from getting into your ductwork and HVAC,” says Glenn Wisemen, sales manager at Top Hat Home Comfort Services in Ontario, Canada. “If they are covered in dust, the air will filter through your furnace much slower, making your system more inefficient.” Allergens also can build up,

. High-efficiency pleated air filters (also known as MERV 11 or 12 filters) can capture the smallest particles, filtering out bacteria, viruses, dust, pollen mold, pet dander, and more. Angi recommends changing filters according to this schedule:

          Keep HVAC Units Clean

Likewise, vents, registers, and condenser and evaporator coils need to be kept clean to prevent a buildup of dust and dirt that could increase energy costs and even reduce your HVAC’s lifespan. AC maintenance tips include keeping outdoor units clean and free of any obstructions. Make sure shrubs or trees near your HVAC unit are at least two feet away to allow adequate flow around the condenser,

Seal Out Drafts and Keep Heat or Cool Air In

Install weather stripping on the top of doors to seal out drafts and prevent warm or cool air from escaping, Wisemen suggests. “Caulk around windows, floors, and other potential sources of heat leakage to keep more money in the bank by reducing your heating bills.” This inexpensive upgrade can lower your costs and help your furnace and AC units operate more efficiently, he adds.

Check Thermostat and Consider a Smart Version

Monitor your thermostat to make sure it’s working properly and consider upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat to increase your unit’s efficiency and avoid overrunning your unit, suggests Anees Jarral, cofounder of Cielo WiGle Inc., a smart-tech HVAC firm, in Seattle. “Whether you have a central HVAC system or mini-splits, pairing your system with a smart thermostat can offer numerous benefits.” For example, it can enable you to set weekly schedules automatically and prevent energy waste, gain remote control and monitoring, and receive energy usage reports.

Examine Ducts for Leaks and Holes

Ducts help distribute the air throughout the house, but up to 30% of the air that moves through ducts can get lost because of leaks, holes, or poorly connected ducts, according to Energy Star. Signs of faulty ducts: rooms that are difficult to heat or cool, tangled or kinked flexible ducts, stuffy rooms, and high summer or winter utility bills. Most ducts are concealed behind walls or ceilings, so you may only be able to examine exposed ones in the basement, attic, or garage. Seal any leaks or holes with duct sealant (mastic) or metal-backed (foil) tape. Also, make sure connections at vents and registers are well-sealed where they meet the floors, walls, and ceiling. If needed, contact a technician to help seal leaky ducts.

          Clean the HVAC Drain Line

HVACs have an AC condensate drain line that can become clogged with built-up sediment, algae, or mold. Some AC units have sensors that may alert you when they detect clogs. If you don’t have those, telltale signs include full drain pans, water around the indoor unit, an AC that won’t turn on, or a musty odor when running the AC. Clean the drain line every three months with a mixture of bleach and water.

          Check Carbon Monoxide Detectors

HVAC systems are a common source of the potentially fatal, odorless gas known as carbon monoxide, particularly when units have been poorly maintained. Your HVAC system can even spread carbon monoxide further around your house. Without a detector, you likely won’t know if CO is present. Replace CO monitor batteries and run monthly tests to make sure monitors are working properly.

Assess the Flame Color on Natural Gas Furnaces

On natural gas furnaces, check the color of the unit’s flame. It should be a crisp, blue color. If the flame appears yellow, orange, or green or pops of these colors, contact an HVAC tech immediately. It may indicate a combustion problem, which can lead to rising amounts of carbon monoxide.

          Schedule a Professional HVAC Checkup

Experts advise having an HVAC system inspected by a professional at least once a year to prevent costly issues or breakdowns. The average HVAC inspection costs $300. That’s an investment, but an HVAC replacement could cost 25 times that amount. So, the inspection may be money well spent. “If you live in an area susceptible to heat waves, comprehensive inspections and cleanings could potentially help you save on your electric bill and reduce the strain on your cooling systems,” Klosterman says.

Watch for These Common HVAC Problems

Red flags can signal that your HVAC isn’t running properly. Those symptoms include unusual sounds and odors, inconsistent temperatures, frequent cycling, and poor airflow. HVAC experts say the following six are the most common problems they spot:

           Refrigerant leaks:

This can reduce cooling power and make your home less comfortable and lead to higher utility bills, Wiseman says.

           Pilot light off:

Furnaces may not be getting enough gas if the pilot light isn’t on. It could be a sign of a gas issue, faulty thermocouple (a device used to measure temperatures), or even cracks in the heat exchanger.

           Thermostat malfunctions:

Inconsistent temperatures throughout the home, frequent cycling on and off (or short cycling), and poor airflow could point to problems with the thermostat, blower motor, or clogged filters, Wisemen says. “Whether it’s faulty wiring or an outdated model, a bad thermostat can make your system turn on and off at the wrong times or not reach the right temperature.”

           Gas leaks:

Beware of any smells of rotten eggs inside the home. It could indicate a sulfur gas leak in your HVAC system. If you suspect a gas leak, vacate your home immediately and call for help.

           Clogged filters:

Dirty or clogged HVAC filters “force the system to work harder, leading to wear and tear, overheating, or even a total shutdown,” Wiseman warns.

           Aging units:

HVACs typically last 15 to 25 years, according to the “Study of Life Expectancy of Home Components” conducted by the National Association of Home Builders and Bank of America Home Equity. (The average lifespan for furnaces is 15 to 20 years; heat pumps, 16 years; and air conditioning units, 10 to 15 years.)

If you spot problems, contact a technician for HVAC servicing. Find companies that specialize in HVAC servicing for repairs or installation. Check online directories for heating and cooling companies such as the Better Business Bureau, Yelp, or Angi, or ask neighbors or a real estate agent for recommendations. Be sure to read online reviews of any HVAC service companies you’re considering.

The Costs of Ignoring Home HVAC Maintenance

A new HVAC system costs an average $7,500 and possibly upward to $12,500, depending on the type and size of unit. An HVAC repair, on the other hand, could cost a fraction of that, averaging $350 nationwide, although that could vary depending on what needs to be done (from as low as $100 up to $3,000), according to Angi.

Don’t just expect your homeowners insurance to pay up if something goes wrong. Most standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover claims when an HVAC unit is damaged because of general wear and tear or poor maintenance, according to Hippo.

Since HVACs are big-ticket investments, they can have an impact in real estate. You’ll need to disclose if the HVAC isn’t working properly, and a home inspector will likely check it for a home buyer when you sell. If you have a new HVAC, that's a strong selling point, so tout it when you sell. It could raise your home’s value by up to 7%, particularly when installing an energy-efficient system, according to Angi.

Skimping on HVAC maintenance can be costly. But following simple steps and tips can save on your utility bills and repair costs while keeping you a lot more comfortable at home.

When to Use Your BBQ Cover for Protection

Prepare your HVAC system for warmer weather with spring maintenance tips from Steinhardt Heating & Air Conditioning. Improve comfort and efficiency.

Since the inception of grilling, a debate has raged: "When to use your grill cover?" A query as contentious as bone in or out and salting before or after searing. The simplicity of covering a grill belies its complexity. The day’s weather, climate in your area, and even if you have a pool or live near one, can all play a role in how and when you need to cover your grill for protection.

Covering one’s grill isn’t a hard and fast rule. Sometimes it is actually beneficial to not cover, and other times a combination of covering and not covering is what is needed. I talked to a Napoleon Product Expert who explained how to know what to do. Although it is always a good idea to have a cover for your grill, the Napoleon is built to stand up to weather no matter where you are. Less expensive grills aren’t built to our standards of quality and require a little more care to make them last. Basically, if you own a Napoleon Grill and forget to cover it, don’t panic, a little bad weather won’t do much harm.

          Humid Climates:

If you live anywhere that is hot and/or humid, or experience weather that is humid, like areas on both the East and West Coast, as well as anywhere from the top third of Texas up to Saskatchewan these areas all fall under the humid zone. Humid doesn’t necessarily mean that the weather is hot and tropical. It can also mean damp – think a foggy day in London. In areas that experience weather like this, it can be a bad idea to cover your grill. Covering your grill can lead to said humidity being trapped under the cover and against the grill, leading to corrosion. Napoleon’s covers are built for airflow and have vents in them to assist in releasing excess humidity, however it’s still a good idea to give your grill some air sometimes. Your Napoleon will be perfectly fine if you prefer to cover it unless it is in use, just remember to give it a wipe down periodically, and use a stainless polish to protect it.

          Coastal Climates:

Living by the ocean is scenic and relaxing, unless you’re a grill. The salty air and erratic weather are particularly difficult to manage. Our Napoleon Product Expert recommends that you cover, especially when expecting heavy rain and snow, or other inclement weather. Further it is best to perform a weekly wipe down with a damp cloth, followed by a thorough drying. This removes any salty residue and ensures a long life for your grill.

          Dry Climates:

If you live anywhere that is consistently dry - the rest of Texas up through the States and Alberta over to the Rockies, you’re safe to leave the grill uncovered, though we still recommend covering to prevent coatings of dust or debris coating the grill. There’s not much that can hurt a Napoleon Grill. Napoleon’s Product Expert suggests making sure you cover the grill during extreme weather for protection at the very least.

          All Climates:

No matter where you live, it’s a good idea to keep your grill in a sheltered area with space between the grill and any walls, and out of direct wind when possible. Cover your grill once the grill is cool to the touch, when you are expecting bad weather, and if you are planning on storing it without use for an extended period of time. For safety reasons, please, never grill in a completely enclosed space, in your garage, or operate your gas grill indoors. Follow these

Sometimes you make a perfect meal and while waiting for your grill to cool down, the sky opens up and your poor grill (and cover) get soaked. Or you turned off the burners and went inside for a delicious meal, completely forgetting about your grill for days at a time. Don’t fret. This is perfectly alright. Although it’s recommended to have a cover for your grill, it is not necessary to keep your grill covered 24/7. Just remember to give your grill a good wipe down about once a month, and cover it when necessary. If your cover gets wet, allow it to dry completely before covering your grill again. The more you take care of your grill, the longer it can make great meals with you. Check out our selection of covers and

What is the Point of a Grill Cover?

The point of using a grill cover is to ensure that your grill is protected from bad weather, debris, and the harsh, outdoor environment. Protecting your grill from these things will ensure that it stays cleaner and has a long and productive life, providing you with great grilled food for years.

Is it Better to Cover Your Grill or Leave it Uncovered?

Tree sap, lawn and garden chemicals, and evaporation from the nearby pool or hot tub are all chemicals that can have a direct effect on your grill. As well as the microscopic dirt from rain, and even leaves, branches, and hail can all cause damage to the outside of your grill. This is why it is best to keep your grill covered when possible. Moisture buildup can be a concern, however, but a Napoleon grill cover has built-in venting that allows your grill to breathe and prevents gusts of wind from being trapped.

Is it Worth Buying a Grill Cover?

Keeping your grill clean and safe from the harsh outdoor environment is a great reason to make buying a grill cover worth it. Having to do less work to keep your grill clean is always a good thing.

Can I Put a Grill Cover on a Warm Grill?

It is unsafe to put your grill cover onto the grill while it is still warm. You could cause yourself injury. You could melt or damage the grill cover, which will directly damage the grill as well. Your grill will remain warm after cooking for at least 30 to 60 minutes. Once the grill is cool to the touch, it is safe to put the cover on.

          1. Not Changing Air Filters Often Enough

Air filters are critical for trapping airborne contaminants, but if you don’t replace them regularly, they can become clogged and ineffective. This can lead to poor air quality and worsen allergies. Make sure you’re using the right filter with the proper minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating for your needs and changing it regularly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

          2. Ignoring HVAC Maintenance

Skipping routine HVAC maintenance can result in dust, mold, and other pollutants being circulated throughout your home. Regular checkups keep your system working efficiently, improve air quality, and help avoid expensive repairs. Make HVAC maintenance a priority to protect both your health and your investment.

          3. Using Products That Pollute the Air

Many everyday household products release harmful chemicals into the air, including cleaning agents, candles, and even certain indoor plants. These products can introduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and allergens, affecting your indoor air quality. Heating and air conditioning systems can help manage these pollutants, but switching to green cleaning products can further reduce indoor pollution and promote a healthier environment.

          4. Overlooking Ventilation

Proper ventilation is crucial but often neglected. Sealed windows and doors trap pollutants inside, especially during extreme weather. By opening windows when possible and using ventilation systems, you can help flush out indoor contaminants and improve the freshness of your air.

          5. Disregarding Humidity and Fungus Issues

Keeping humidity levels balanced is essential to preventing fungus growth and respiratory issues. High humidity encourages fungus, while low levels can irritate your airways. Using humidifiers or dehumidifiers can help maintain a healthy balance. Try

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. Whether it's about heating your living space during chilly winter months or cooling it down on scorching summer days, HVAC systems are fundamental to ensuring a pleasant temperature and clean air. But what is HVAC how exactly does HVAC work? Let's dive into the meaning of HVAC and discover how it keeps your home cozy and comfortable throughout the year.

What is HVAC and What Does HVAC Stand For?

If you find yourself wondering "what is HVAC?", HVAC refers to the various systems used for moving air between indoor and outdoor areas. HVAC systems are designed to provide comfort and maintain optimal indoor air quality. HVAC systems help maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature in your home year-round, irrespective of external weather conditions. Whether the temperature outside plummets in winter or soars in summer, an HVAC system can regulate indoor temperatures to keep you comfortable.

          How Does HVAC Work?

Understanding how HVAC systems function helps homeowners make smarter choices when it comes to maintaining comfort, efficiency, and indoor air quality. While the components work together seamlessly, each part plays a distinct role in regulating temperature, airflow, and humidity throughout the year.

Air conditioning systems function by removing heat and humidity from the indoor environment. Through a refrigeration cycle, refrigerant absorbs heat from inside the home and releases it outdoors. Traditional air conditioners and heat pumps both use this process to cool the air. In cooling mode, a heat pump works in reverse of its heating function, drawing heat from inside and expelling it outside via the outdoor unit.

When integrated with a thermostat, the HVAC system automatically adjusts between heating and cooling modes based on your settings—delivering consistent comfort with minimal effort. Combined with ductwork, vents, and optional air quality enhancements, the full HVAC system works as a unified solution to keep your home comfortable in every season.

What HVAC System is Right for Me?

Choosing the right HVAC system for your home depends on several key factors, and making an informed decision can help ensure long-term comfort and efficiency. Every home is unique, so it's important to consider more than just heating or cooling capacity.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

The size and age of your home can affect how much heating or cooling power you need.

Your home’s design and layout, including ceiling height and window placement, can impact airflow and temperature balance.

The local climate plays a big role in determining whether you need a stronger focus on heating, cooling, or both.

The condition of your existing ductwork (if any) may influence whether a ducted or ductless system is the better fit.

Spring HVAC Maintenance Tips: Keep Your Home Comfortable!

Get your HVAC system ready for warmer weather with spring maintenance tips from Steinhardt Heating & Air Conditioning for reliable comfort and efficiency.

As spring arrives, so does the chance to refresh your home for the warmer months. It's a time when flowers bloom, and the air fills with life, making it the perfect moment to pay attention to your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system.

A well-maintained HVAC system not only enhances airflow and comfort but can also lower your energy bills. In fact, routine upkeep can boost energy efficiency by 5% to 15%. Let's explore practical tips to get your HVAC system ready for the sunny days ahead.

          Tip One

          - Clean and Replace Your Air Filters

Changing your air filters is one of the simplest yet most impactful maintenance tasks you can do. Clogged filters restrict airflow, forcing your HVAC system to work harder, which can increase energy costs by up to 15%.

          Hint

: Check your filters every month and replace them at least every three months. If you have pets or suffer from allergies, replace them monthly and consider a Reme Halo Air Purification System for your home. Ask your Comfort Technician about a Reme Halo!

          Tip

           Two

          - Clean Around the Outdoor HVAC Unit

Spring means your outdoor HVAC unit can easily collect leaves, dirt, and pollen. Keeping this area clean significantly boosts airflow and system performance.

          Hint

: Clear a two-foot radius around your unit, removing any plants, leaves, or other debris. This simple act ensures your system operates efficiently. In fact, a clean outdoor unit can improve cooling efficiency by up to 10% during peak heat periods

          Tip Three

          - Adjust Your Thermostat

Your thermostat plays a vital role in maintaining a comfortable temperature. Ensuring that it functions correctly is essential for effective climate control and energy savings.

"You can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7-10 degrees Fahrenheit for eight hours a day from its normal setting." –

          Duke Energy

          Tip Four

Scheduling a professional tune-up is an essential step in maintaining your HVAC system. They can uncover issues like worn electrical components and low refrigerant levels that you might miss.
